Sister Helen Prejean's life story inspires new documentary 'Rebel Nun.'

Universal Pictures Content Group and Passion Pictures have completed production on a new documentary centered around the life of Sister Helen Prejean, the Catholic nun whose story inspired the acclaimed 1995 film 'Dead Man Walking.' Titled 'Rebel Nun,' the documentary delves into Sister Helen's journey as a leading advocate against the death penalty.

The original film, 'Dead Man Walking,' starred Susan Sarandon in an Oscar-winning role as Sister Helen Prejean, alongside Sean Penn. Directed by Tim Robbins, the film brought attention to Sister Helen's work and her efforts to abolish the death penalty.

Now at 84 years old, Sister Helen continues her fight against capital punishment. The documentary follows her current battle to prevent the execution of a Death Row inmate in Oklahoma, despite doubts about the inmate's guilt.

'Rebel Nun' is directed by Dominic Sivyer, who gained unprecedented access to Sister Helen and compiled rare archive footage spanning six decades. The film also features interviews with individuals closely involved in Sister Helen's advocacy work, including families of victims.

Executive producers of the documentary include industry veterans such as Helen Parker, Andrew Ruhemann, Amy Foster, Kari Lia, and Hamish Fergusson. The team behind the project aims to shed light on pressing social justice issues, particularly within the criminal justice system.

The filmmakers emphasize the importance of Sister Helen's tireless dedication to justice and her unwavering commitment to reforming the legal system. Director Dominic Sivyer is praised for his candid portrayal of Sister Helen, showcasing both her strength and vulnerability.

'Rebel Nun' offers an honest and unflinching look at Sister Helen Prejean's impactful work as an anti-death penalty advocate. The documentary aims to spark conversations and raise awareness about critical social justice issues in the United States.

Submarine Entertainment Sales will handle worldwide distribution for 'Rebel Nun,' ensuring that Sister Helen's story reaches a global audience.
