New docuseries on Steph Curry to reveal insight on Warriors’ turbulent season

The new docuseries, “Stephen vs. the Game,” a Facebook Watch production, debuted on Thursday, and the story of the relatively turbulent 2018-19 Warriors season is about to be told from Stephen Curry’s perspective.

Directed by Gotham Chopra, the series begins with stories from Curry’s childhood before moving to his preparation for the Warriors’ current quest for a third straight NBA title. Chopra followed Curry through the now concluded regular season, and though the first episode featured the unveiling of yet another NBA championship banner and Curry’s latest ring, the series is set to give new insight into a campaign that saw Golden State struggle to keep focus.

Chopra says Curry’s thoughts on the season will be revealed on future episodes, according to The Mercury News’ Chuck Barney.

“Maintaining greatness is much harder than attaining it. And the fatigue of winning is very real,” Chopra said. “Steph talks openly about that. There have been cracks in that on-court, zen-like thing, for sure. He’s hyper-competitive and he gets very frustrated when things aren’t going right.”

The Warriors started 10-1, but Curry then suffered an injury against the Bucks. The season went further off the rails when Golden State forwards Kevin Durant and Draymond Green had a heated argument during a game against the Clippers shortly after Curry’s injury. Green was suspended for a contest, though the two reassessed their relationship and eventually found common ground.

Durant’s impending free-agency was a factor in his quarrel with Green and a constant source of league chatter throughout the season. The fatigue from chasing a third consecutive title wore on the team as well and they lost more home games usual, sometimes in blowout fashion, on the way to 57 wins, the lowest total in coach Steve Kerr’s tenure.

The Warriors now appear ready to make another championship run after being tested by the Clippers in the first round and are currently up 2-0 in their second-round matchup with James Harden and the Rockets, with Game 3 scheduled for Saturday.

But it wasn’t easy getting to that point. And now, thanks to Chopra, who also directed the informative docuseries on quarterback Tom Brady, “Tom vs Time,” Curry’s perspective on the season, his tenth with the club, will soon be revealed.
