New Derbyshire innovation hub for Spanish high-speed train giant Talgo edges closer

Plans by Spanish high-speed train manufacturer Talgo to open an innovation hub in Derbyshire which could create almost 200 jobs look set to move a step closer.

Back in November, 2018, the firm announced plans to build a UK factory in Longannet, in Scotland, and an innovation hub in Chesterfield.

Now, the company has said it is poised to sign a framework agreement with Chesterfield Borough Council, which could ultimately see the innovation centre created at Barrow Hill Roundhouse.

The firm has earmarked the Derbyshire site from which the firm’s “All Britain” strategy will be developed.

Talgo said that the strategy aims to protect and grow the supply-chain, provide opportunities for young people, and grow the UK’s industrial base.

Talgo is among the train-builders hoping to land the £2.75 billion deal to build rolling stock for HS2.

However, it faces competition from a joint venture involving Hitachi and Bombardier, the latter of which has its UK train-building site in Derby. Also in the running are Siemens, CAF and Alstom.

Borough council leader Tricia Gilby said the framework agreement will be signed next month (Talgo)

This week, Talgo UK, which has recently established a head office at Barrow Hill, delivered one of its high-speed rail carriages to the site, which it has gifted to Chesterfield Borough Council.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of the borough council, said: “The gifting of the high-speed technology vehicle, symbolises the culmination of our efforts over the last two years as part of Talgo’s ‘all Britain Strategy’.

“I’m extremely pleased that the firm remains committed to Chesterfield and shares our ambitions to maximise the opportunities presented by unprecedented growth in the rail sector and transformational infrastructure projects, including HS2.

“I’m delighted to announce that in February, Chesterfield Borough Council expects to enter into a framework agreement with Talgo UK.

“The agreement will recognise the recent establishment of the firm’s headquarters at Barrow Hill and will set out the milestones for the delivery of the innovation centre.”

Carlos de Palacio, president of Talgo, said: “I was delighted to deliver a high-speed present from Spain.

“This is part of our plan to generate better understanding of Talgo’s technologies, which are being used around the world- but have so far eluded the UK.

“I hope that it is not long before we see the next generation of Talgo’s products built in the UK, with technical knowledge and innovation being provided by a team headquartered in Chesterfield, and drawing on the knowledge and expertise of the whole UK.”
