New Delhi Municipal Council’s green signal to mechanised sweeping at Palika Bazaar, more sites

NEW DELHI: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has given administrative and financial approval for carrying out cleaning work at major markets, office complexes and inoculation centres using mechanical equipment. It has sanctioned around Rs 10 crore for mechanical sweeping at Palika Bazaar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Place, Palika Bhawan, Yashwant Place Market, Chanakya Bhawan and Kidwai Nagar shopping complex among other places.

“As the manual sweeping system is insufficient to meet high standards, we will outsource the work of cleaning and sweeping of various NDMC buildings, commercial complexes, markets and offices. For improving the quality of services, the council in a recent meeting gave administrative approval and expenditure sanction amounting to Rs 9.75 crore for the work of mechanised housekeeping,” said NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay.

In May, the civic body had finalised a comprehensive housekeeping plan for Connaught Place, Baba Khadak Singh Marg and Janpath roads. An amount of Rs 28 crore was allocated for hiring the services of a concessionaire for two years.

“We are planning to initiate the tendering process from August 10 and work is expected to start before Diwali at the sites. The scope of work will include deep cleaning of granite, stones installed in corridors, back lanes, removing paan stains at corners, mechanised sweeping of common and parking areas using different equipment,” said Upadhyay.

The whole exercise will be monitored by a third party.

At Hanuman Mandir Complex, mechanised sweeping, scrubbing, cleaning and washing with a jetting machine will start by September, said an official. “We have approved a separate proposal for repairing the area and creating proper shoe racks for the temple visitors. The plan also includes hiring of security guards,” the official added.

NDMC members said that mechanised sweeping would reduce the dust pollution to a great extent.
