New Day: Trinity Mirror 'to launch new weekday newspaper'

A new national newspaper is to be launched in the UK by the publishers of the Daily Mirror, it has been reported.

The new tabloid will be unveiled this month with a cover price of 25p and called New Day, according to Sky News.

It had earlier been reported that the newspaper would target a female audience, but a source told the broadcaster New Day would be aiming at a “broader reach” than that.

A launch date has been scheduled for leap day – 29 February – the same day that publisher Trinity Mirror releases its annual results.

City AM also reported New Day was due to be unveiled "in less than a fortnight", while it reported that Trinity Mirror had also been linked with the purchase of the Daily Express.

According to Sky News, sources say the new tabloid will "initially" cost 25p, opening up the possibility of future price rises. It said there would be an initial run of one million copies, depending on how much interest there was in the build-up to launch, while deals with advertisers and major distributors have reportedly already been discussed.

When approached by The Independent, a spokesman for Trinity Mirror declined to comment on the Sky News report.
