New date set for murder trial of NT police officer Zachary Rolfe

The murder trial of Northern Territory Police constable Zachary Rolfe has been rescheduled to begin on August 18, the Northern Territory Supreme Court has heard.

Constable Rolfe is charged with one count of murder after the death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker in the remote community of Yuendumu, north-west of Alice Springs, in November 2019.

Constable Rolfe has previously indicated to the court that he intends to plead not guilty.

The trial was due to begin on Monday, July 26 and run for four weeks, but Acting Justice Dean Mildren last week adjourned it indefinitely because key prosecutors were unable to travel to Darwin.

Barristers Philip Strickland and Sophie Callan are based in Sydney, which is currently declared a COVID-19 hotspot by the Northern Territory government.

Mr Strickland will undergo 14 days of quarantine at the Howard Springs facility from Monday.

His junior, Ms Callan will be unable to travel to Darwin, and another prosecutor from Victoria will replace her.

During a short mention earlier this week, the court heard suggestions that the trial could be delayed until January, but Constable Rolfe's defence team argued against such a lengthy delay.

Constable Rolfe, who has been on bail, and his legal team, based partially in South Australia, travelled to Darwin for a week of pre-trial hearings last week, when it was decided the trial would be delayed.

Mr Strickland and Ms Callan appeared via videolink from Sydney.

The full court of the Supreme Court, which includes five judges, has also been asked to determine four points of law before the start of the trial.

The trial was initially set to run for four weeks but is now expected to take three.
