New data shows Scotland has worst covid infection rate in UK as one in 100 now testing positive

Coronavirus cases are continuing to rise across Scotland due to the spread of the Delta variant, new data has shown.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that one in 100 people are testing positive for covid-19 in the week to July 3, according to the infection survey.

That is up from one in 150 in the previous week, and the highest level since the week to January 16.

All figures are for people in private households.

Scotland has the highest rate of covid across the four nations of the UK.

Around one in 160 people in private households in England had Covid-19 in the week to July 3 - up from one in 260 in the previous week.

This is the highest level since the week to February 19.

For Wales, the latest estimate is one in 340 people, up from one in 450 in the previous week and the highest level since the week to February 27.

In Northern Ireland the latest estimate is one in 300 people, up from one in 670 and the highest since the week to April 3.

Yesterday, the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that 2,802 people had returned positive for the virus in the previous 24 hours.

In that same time period, four deaths were recorded which means 7,744 Scots have passed away since the start of the pandemic in March last year.

There are currently 401 people in hospitals with covid, while 38 Scots are in intensive care units.

Sarah Crofts, from the ONS, said: "We are seeing marked increases in infections across all four UK countries driven by the Delta variant, which continues to be the most common across the UK.

"As the vaccine rollout continues and restrictions are further lifted, it is crucial that we continue to closely monitor the data."
