New data shows Covid-19 at record levels in West Lothian as lockdown considered

The latest data shows Covid-19 infections are now at record levels in West Lothian.

The Public Health Scotland figures revealed that as of August 25 there were 141 new infections.

Across the week between August 17 and 23 another 804 cases were recorded in the county.

This is far beyond the previous record levels West Lothian has registered since the pandemic started last year.

All 37 neighbourhoods in West Lothian continue to record positive cases of the virus.

Bankton and Murieston continues to be the most infectious area, with 43 infections among their 5270 residents over the past week.

Meanwhile, a circuit breaker lockdown is among the options being considered to slow the recent spike of coronavirus infections in Scotland, it has been reported.

A source, who has knowledge of government planning, told The Times: “There are two options: You could either put in a circuit breaker, you could shut down completely for a short period.

“Or you could move back through the stages and say we are going to limit indoor gatherings, we are going to re-introduce distancing.”

Deputy First Minister John Swinney also said that physical distancing measures could be introduced in Scotland if cases continue to rise.
