New Data Finds Gen Z Leading The Charge In Sacrificing Work-Life Balance For More Pay

Not to be all philosophical on main, but life is nothing more than a balancing act. Every day, we’re out here balancing relationships, our health, our jobs and finances, all while trying to indulge in the joys that life brings despite the cost of living crisis.

However, while new data has revealed that 65 per cent of Aussies would prefer a better work-life balance over more pay, Gen-Z would sacrifice balance for that extra dosh.

According to SEEK’s recent Money Matters Report — in which the online employment platform surveyed 3,000 workers across generations, locations, and industries — Gen Z workers (folks who were born in the late 1990s to early 2000s) are leading the charge when it comes to hustling for that bag by any means necessary.

While the report found that 65 per cent of Aussie workers prioritise a healthy work-life balance, 85 per cent of Gen Z workers with work-from-home arrangements would return to the office full-time for higher pay. The survey results also showed that Gen Zers are willing to travel further for more pay and more open to extra hours or take on more responsibilities for that sweet, sweet dosh.

On top of that, SEEK also found that 28 per cent of Gen Zers have a side hustle in comparison to the national response of 18 per cent.

Reflecting on the data, SEEK’s Career Coach Leah Lambart highlights the complex balancing act Australian workers are currently facing.

“We’re seeing workers caught between two competing forces — the desire for genuine work-life balance, and the financial pressures that are intensifying in the current economic climate,” Lambart said.

“We can expect Australian workers to be increasingly considering the whole package of their work experience, not just simply their pay packet. This could look like negotiating a pay increase in exchange for more time working onsite, or getting a regular RDO in return for longer working hours across the month.”

Honestly, as a Gen Zer, I am NOT SURPRISED that we’re out here hustling. While I’d love to give hustle culture a big middle finger, the current cost-of-living crisis is unfortunately lingering here for a while, and I will do anything (anything legal, oop) to make that extra dosh to survive.

Australia’s depressing economic climate is also visible in the report, as SEEK’s survey found that only 35 per cent of Aussies feel financially secure and that four in ten Aussies believe you need to earn at least $100K to live comfortably.

Yep, it’s grim out ‘ere.
