New data and Covid-19 growth in nine counties in particular shows why NPHET want level five lockdown

The huge Covid-19 growth in the majority of counties over the past week shows just why NPHET recommended a move to Level Five.

The health experts, headed by Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan, said that something needed to be done in order to stop the spread of the virus.

In the space of a week - from midnight, September 30 to midnight October 7 - only one county in Ireland has seen a fall in the Covid rate.

That county is Waterford, which now has a rate of 40.5 having previously been on the cusp of further restrictions.

Nine counties - Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Kerry, Laois, Limerick, Longford, Monaghan and Sligo - have all seen massive jumps in this period.

Here's a breakdown of how quickly the virus is growing in each county in Ireland.
