New dad caught using mobile phone in prison to get updates on his premature baby

A prisoner who was caught with a mobile phone was trying to speak to his partner after the birth of their child.

Kade Reynolds, 25, was a serving prisoner at HMP Parc in Bridgend at the time of the offence.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday heard a prison officer attended Reynolds’ cell at 9.18am on June 7 to conduct a check.

Prosecutor Anthony Cheung said the officer saw the door was open and could see the defendant sat on the toilet and speaking on the phone.

Once he realised he had been spotted Reynolds tried to dispose of the phone but the officer managed to use force to retrieve the device, which was handed to the security department of the prison.

The defendant, who was jailed for supplying Class A drugs and breaching a suspended sentence, admitted having possession of the phone and pleaded guilty to the charge in court.

Defence barrister Ben Waters said his client had become a father a couple of days before the incident and had been in contact with his partner and mother after the baby was born prematurely and placed in intensive care. There was no suggestion he was using the phone for criminal purposes.

Sentencing, the Recorder of Cardiff Judge Eleri Rees said: “This was a bit of an own goal – you’d be looking at release had you not committed this offence whilst in prison.”

Reynolds was sentenced to five months imprisonment to be served consecutively with his current sentence and was ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge.
