New crossing and safety measures welcomed on Hucknall road that's 'accident waiting to happen'

A new toucan crossing will be installed and other safety measures introduced after residents warned about a dangerous stretch of road.

The crossing will be installed on Watnall Road near the A611 Hucknall bypass, which will provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

Councillor Dave Shaw, who represents the Hucknall West ward for the Ashfield Independents, said: "I am pleased that the county council have committed to these works after a campaign led by local residents and ourselves.

"Pedestrians and cyclists told me that the road was an accident waiting to happen.

"People explained that crossing Watnall Road felt like putting your life in someone else’s hands."

Residents in the area are relieved new measures are being taken to tackle the dangerous conditions of the busy road.

Ian Haddon, 61, who lives near the bypass, thinks the new crossing will be perfect for dog walkers.

He said: "It's a good idea and dog walkers can use it. It's very busy around here.

"People have been run over and killed at the bypass. It's needed."

The toucan crossing will incorporate a controlled area indicated by zig-zag markings along the approaches to the crossing within which parking and loading by vehicles will be prohibited at all times.

Another resident, Lisa Talbot 41, who grew up in the area, agrees with Ian that the roads are very dangerous.

She added: "It's non-stop traffic and incredibly busy.

"It's a good idea as it is hard to get across. It's absolutely mad."

The county council has also agreed to carry out speed surveys in Babbacome Way, Common Lane, Nabbs Lane and Salterford Road.

Mother of two Sarah Bray, 45, who lives at Common Lane thinks a speed survey is a great idea as she is concerned for the safety of her kids.

She said: "This corner outside my house, drivers come round very fast.

"We have got speed bumps but they still go over at speed.

"As a mum, it'll make me feel better.

"With two teenagers on bikes, I think it is all a good idea."
