A campaign to help a murdered teenager’s brothers and sisters raise money to pay for his funeral has almost reached its £5,000 target in a single day.
Myron Issac-Yarde, 17, was found dying in a backstreet in New Cross, south-east London, on Sunday night. Two teenage boys arrested on suspicion of murder after the knife killing have been bailed.
Two suspects, aged 15 and 16, were arrested in New Cross on Sunday night, close to the scene on Camplin Street where Myron was found fatally injured at dusk.
It has since emerged that Myron’s mother, Marcelle, died of cancer last year. His siblings are struggling to raise the money they need to pay for Myron’s funeral and a memorial to his life.
Well-wishers donating money to a gofundme page set up on the family’s behalf had by Tuesday afternoon raised £4,500 towards the £5,000 target to pay for Myron’s funeral.
One commenter on the page, Sheniqua Shenz, wrote: “Thank you to everyone helping his funeral to be paid as he didn’t have his mother around to help God bless you guys and I hope these young boys will learn a lesson thank you and keep donating.”
In another comment, Rhiana Wood, referring to Myron, who was a rapper, by his stage name, said: “Rip MDOT[,] u was loved by so many people and always will be can’t believe gone so soon and yung rest in Paradise angel to me meet again.”
Officers who discovered the dying teenager had been responding to reports of a fight between up to 10 youths on New Cross Road, which broke out at about 7.40pm.
Police officers found Myron minutes later in Camplin Street, where he had collapsed after being stabbed. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, but he died less than two hours later.
Speaking at the scene where Myron was found, DCI Rebecca Reeves, of the Metropolitan police, reiterated her appeal for anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
“This is a quiet residential area and I am confident people who were at home, or in the area, would have seen or heard some of the events,” Reeves said. “Whatever information you have, however small, it may be important, so please call the police or Crimestoppers.
Reeves also said police were keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the original disturbance on New Cross Road, at the junction with Avonley Road.
“Witnesses have described an altercation involving a group of male youths and it is important that anyone who witnessed this comes forward and speaks to the police, so that we can establish if it is linked to the murder,” she said.
Meanwhile, friends and fans of Myron, who was well known as an up-and-coming rap artist, have continued to pay tribute to him. The grime producer Novelist dedicated an instrumental to Myron, who performed under the name MDOT.
The rapper Giggs also paid tribute to Myron, sharing a picture of the teenager in an Instagram post with the message: “Proper sad to say ‘RIP Myron aka M Dot’ as I was just talkin to this kid just yesterday tellin him how good him and his friends music is and to keep working hard. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family.”
Hundreds of people turned out on Monday evening for a memorial event for the teenager. He was studying music performance at Big Creative Education in Walthamstow, having recently left Deptford Green comprehensive school.
Local sources said Myron was well known in the community, and much admired by younger children who knew him at Deptford Green for his achievements in music.
His mother Marcelle died of cancer last year. Myron organised and performed at a community fundraising concert in June in her memory.
