New Covid travel changes open up 47 holiday destinations to Scottish travellers

This week has marked some significant changes to the rules surrounding international travel.

Following last month's simplification of the traffic light system, in which the amber list was scrapped, travelling abroad for Scots just got even easier.

Before Monday, the red list still contained a significant number of countries - severely limiting holiday options - but now 47 countries have been removed.

Only seven destinations still remain on the list, as reported by Herts Live.

These are: Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

That means, if you plan to travel to any of these countries, you will still be required to spend 11 nights in quarantine in a hotel upon your arrival back in the UK.

Despite the red list being reduced, there are still a number of countries who aren't letting in UK tourists.

At present, there are currently 71 countries and territories which are closed to UK tourists regardless of their vaccination status.

Meanwhile, from late October, it is hoped eligible and fully vaccinated passengers, including under 18s, who are returning from a rest of world country will have the option to replace their day two test with a cheaper lateral flow test, followed by a free PCR test if positive.

Passengers taking postal tests will be able to send a picture of their lateral flow test as a minimum requirement to verify the test result, with the ambition remaining to have this in place for people returning from half-term breaks by the end of October.

UK Transport Secretary and Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps said: "With half-term and winter sun around the corner, we’re making it easier for families and loved ones to reunite, by significantly cutting the number of destinations on the red list, thanks in part to the increased vaccination efforts around the globe.

"Restoring people’s confidence in travel is key to rebuilding our economy and levelling up this country. With less restrictions and more people travelling, we can all continue to move safely forward together along our pathway to recovery."
