New covid restrictions in Scotland 'inevitable' as fears grow over spread of Omicron

Scots are likely to face new coronavirus restrictions in a bid to stop the spread of the Omicron variant across the country, the Health Secretary has announced.

Humza Yousaf revealed the Scottish Government is considering putting in preventative measures as cases continue to rise.

It comes as from today anyone over 30 can now book their third dose of the covid vaccine with the scheme to be rolled to over 18s later in the week.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is set to address the Scottish Parliament tomorrow, Tuesday, about the latest situation regarding the pandemic and according to Yousaf changes to restrictions are "inevitable".

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said changes are "inevitable" (PA)

Asked on the BBC's Good Morning Scotland programme if the nation should brace for new measures to tackle the spread of Omicron, Yousaf replied: "I think it's inevitable we will announce additional protective measures.

"I would be reluctant to get into detail on that because we're working through that detail.

"The First Minister will rightly update parliament first tomorrow.

"It is really important that we try to do this with as much support from the Treasury which hasn't been forthcoming thus far, because we know that of course there's been an impact on businesses.

"We are looking at preventative measures again, and the First Minister will announce detail of that tomorrow."

Last night Nicola Sturgeon announced the covid vaccine booster programme will be accelerated so all adult Scots are offered a third jab by the New Year.

She said "urgent work" was underway to boost public immunity in the face of the O micron variant sweeping the country.

The SNP leader issued a statement moments after Boris Johnson finished a televised address at 8pm in which the Prime Minister warned the UK faced a "tidal wave" of infections.
