New COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations top Ohio's recent numbers

COLUMBUS, Ohio _ New coronavirus cases, deaths and hospitalizations in Ohio all rose above recent three-week averages on Wednesday.

Cases inched upward as another 1,422 Ohioans tested positive for the coronavirus. Wednesday's new cases were higher than the most-recent three-week average of 1,215 new cases reported per day, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

At least 104,248 Ohioans have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

More than 1.72 million tests for the virus have been administered in Ohio so far, according to the state.

The seven-day average rate at which Ohioans tested positive for the virus remained at 5.1% on Monday, the latest day for which that data is available, according to the state. Before Sunday, the last time the positive test rate was that low was June 28.

An additional 26 Ohioans were reported to have died of the virus Wednesday, which is above a three-week average of 24 new deaths per day, according to the state. Since the pandemic began, 3,734 Ohioans have died of COVID-19.

As of Wednesday, another 141 people across the state were hospitalized. That's more than the three-week average of 97 new hospitalizations a day.

Another 22 Ohioans were admitted to intensive care units, which is six more than the three-week average of 16 new ICU admissions per day, state data shows.

Of Ohio's 88 counties, Franklin County remains the epicenter for the COVID-19 outbreak in the state. As of Wednesday, Franklin County reported 18,965 cases and 531 deaths, according to the state.

Cuyahoga County remains the second -hardest hit in Ohio. Cuyahoga County has reported 13,869 cases and 512 deaths so far, according to the state health department.

At 9,844, Hamilton County has the third-highest number of cases. Lucas County has the third-most deaths with 326 reported as of Wednesday.

Gov. Mike DeWine did not host an afternoon briefing on the virus Wednesday.
