New council homes to be built on site of town centre office building

New council homes are set to be given the green light in Wishaw town centre.

North Lanarkshire Council’s finance and resources committee is expected to give the green light to the proposals to construct the homes at King’s House, a disused office building.

The council is seeking committee approval for the transfer of land for inclusion in the New Build programme.

The report, written by the council’s head of asset and procurement solutions, James McKinstry, states: “The property, known as King’s House, Wishaw, was leased to and occupied by Social Work for a number of years and in the run up to an approaching expiry of the lease to Social Work in 2020, the building was purchased from the landlord by the council for inclusion within the Growth Programme.

“Purchasing the property negated the need to make payment of terminal dilapidations to the landlord upon the lease expiry, said payment instead being towards the purchase.

“The location is mixed use in nature and with a downturn in demand for offices in the town, the site was identified as a residential development opportunity.”

The site is located within a mainly residential area of Wishaw.

A separate car park on the north side of King Street is bounded on all sides by homes.

The proposal is to demolish the building whereupon social housing can be built as part of the New Build programme.

A total of 12 flats and four terraced would be built in its place.

Mr McKinstry’s report adds: “The residential development will regenerate the site of a redundant building and help the council meet its supply targets contributing to meeting local housing need, while creating new houses for social rent.”

The finance and resources committee will consider the plans at its next meeting on Thursday, May 27.
