New coronavirus vaccination centre to open in Portishead

A new coronavirus vaccination centre is set to open in Portishead this week.

Staff from the town's main GP surgery, the Portishead Medical Group, will be delivering vaccinations from Portishead Folk Hall in the town centre.

The Medical Group is Portishead's designated vaccination centre, with all the local practices in Portishead, the surrounding area and parts of Clevedon joining together to co-ordinate vaccinations in one place.

With the increased roll-out of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine, the number of sites where the jabs can be administered can also expand.

Local health chiefs said they are 'delighted' to get the vaccination centre up and running in Portishead.

"We have worked with the town council to secure the Folk Hall as an additional venue for the mass vaccination programme in Portishead and are delighted to be able to work with the supportive team at the Folk Hall," said Kath Payne, who is the managing partner at Portishead Medical Group.

Portishead GP Dr Geeta Iyer is a member of the team responsible for the vaccination programme across North Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. She said: "Thanks to the ongoing efforts of colleagues across our communities were are able to offer this clinic as part of our work to improve access to the vaccination for our population who need it closer to home."

The Portishead Medical Group will now be contacting people by phone or letter to invite them to receive a vaccination - and they have asked that people wait to be contacted rather than ring the surgery to try to book a jab.

The Portishead Folk Hall is owned by the town council. "Portishead Town Council is delighted to be working with Portishead Medical Group to help get vaccinations to as many people in Portishead as quickly as possible," said council chairman Paul Gardner.

"A huge thank you to all the staff at Portishead Medical Group for the tremendous work they have done already," he added.
