New coronavirus 'symptom' skin experts say should be added to official NHS list

Skin rashes could be added to the NHS list of coronavirus symptoms.

Dermatologists say there's increasing evidence they could be a sign of the infection and vital to helping stop its spread.

Officially the NHS lists a high temperature or fever, a new persistent new cough and a loss of taste or smell as Covid-19 indictors.

But the British Association of Dermatologists say a link between certain rashes and the virus are becoming clear, the Daily Record reports.

Around nine per cent of patients have reported rashes on fingers and toes or their bodies.

Association president, Dr Tanya Bleiker, said: "The association between certain rashes and Covid-19 has become increasingly clear, and being able to recognise these is crucial for reducing the spread of the disease."

So-called 'Covid toe', which has been seen by a growing number of doctors, is where a patient has red lesions on some or all of the toes, The Times reports.

The World Health Organisation has had "a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes" on its list of symptoms for months.

There is concern that if rashes are not added to the official UK list, many people who are positive but have no symptoms could unknowingly spread the disease.

Rashes were twice as common in children as adults, researchers have discovered.

Experts say a new skin rash is a slightly better predictor of a positive test than a fever or cough.
