New coronavirus rash could be only warning symptom for patients, says expert

This Morning's Dr Chris told hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes new research shows there is a COVID-19 symptom that was previously unknown.

He explained that some patients have a skin rash as their only symptom of the potentially deadly virus.

The more commonly-known symptoms of COVID-19 are a cough, a fever, and changes in sense of smell or taste.

Dr Chris was speaking to the hosts, who are covering Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, about the latest health headlines.

Eamonn asked: "With regards to symptoms of COVID-19, 10% of people who were infected also suffered from skin rashes," and a Daily Express headline showed on the screen.

"This is very interesting, the three main symptoms to look for in COVID-19 is a fever, a cough, and a change in smell or taste, they are the three main symptoms," replied the doctor.

"Now the experts are saying there is a fourth important symptom, and that is a skin rash.

"A skin rash  may be the only symptom a patient gets, and it can vary it can be like chicken pox, or an allergic reaction.

"In the early days in China, they identified a skin rash which is called 'COVID toes' or 'COVID fingers', and the changes there were like chilblains, purple or red swellings that were painful on the fingers and toes.

"So if you do get a skin rash, that's an important indication that it may be COVID," he explained.

Ruth asked what people should do if they do discover a rash that matches that description.

"Call your surgery, explain the symptoms, that you have read about this as a very important symptom of coronavirus," replied Dr Chris.

"You'll probably have a test to see if you're COVID positive."
