New coronavirus help line launched in Bristol - all you need to know

There is a new free-to-use dedicated telephone hotline in Bristol for anyone to call if they need help during the coronavirus lockdown.

The 'We Are Bristol' support phone number went live today (Wednesday, April 1) and council chiefs said it will offer a potential lifeline to isolated and worried residents across the city.

Anyone phoning the number - 0800 694 0184 - will get through a team of dedicate call handlers to provide support for people with a wide range of needs, from getting hold of food supplies, other essential items and medication.

The hotline operators will also be able to arrange follow-up support from the army of volunteers who have stepped forward to help the authorities in each individual area of Bristol since the pandemic lockdown began, as well as any support needed from other organisations.

The hotline will initially be available during office hours - that's 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and is free to call. The Mayor of Bristol said he hoped the hotline could soon move to be seven-days-a-week.

Six mild symptoms of coronavirus that you shouldn't ignore

“The free hotline is in place to ensure we have a non-digital way for our most vulnerable residents and those at risk to access the help they may need, wherever we can," said the Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees.

"The coronavirus pandemic means many of us are worried, anxious and need help.

"Here in Bristol we have volunteers who are waiting to help you – when you most need it. We hope to move the hotline to a seven day operation soon.

“Anyone concerned about feeling isolated, getting food, essential items or medicine they need could benefit from the phone line. Even if you simply need someone to walk your dog or a person to talk to once a week. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved.

“Call the We Are Bristol support hotline on 0800 694 0184. Together we are stronger. Together We Are Bristol," he added.

With vulnerable and elderly people told not to go out at all - and many without local support networks of friends or neighbours who might be able to help them, there are already cases of unscrupulous tricksters preying on the elderly or vulnerable by pretending to be from official organisations like the British Red Cross, and taking their money for shopping, but then disappearing.

The council hopes the hotline will be the first port-of-call for anyone who needs anything but can't go out and get it themselves - and this will further protect the vulnerable against the scammers.

The line will be answered by up to 30 staff who are all trained to handle calls and refer those with specific needs to the right areas.

There will also be a call back option to limit waiting time during busy periods and ensure everyone who needs help can access it.

The freephone number will direct to the council's original helpline number, 0117 3523011, which is still in operation.
