Brentwood in Essex is now England's worst coronavirus hotspot after the number of new infections doubled in just a week.
Grim Christmas Eve figures reveal that just 25 English towns and cities have seen a fall in Covid-19 infections in a week - with an alarming 290 recording rising case numbers.
Public Health England data found there are 11 places with rates of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 people.
Several hotspots have seen their figures double in just seven days.
It comes as large swathes of the country are set to be plunged into Tier 4 on Boxing Day - with millions more forced to cancel Christmas plans.
Thurrock, also in Essex, has the second highest rate, up from 690.0 to 1,328.8, followed by nearby Epping Forest.
Local authorities with the biggest week-on-week jumps are Castle Point, Rochford and Southend-on-Sea.

Today the Department of Health announced a further 574 deaths and 39,036 infections recorded in the last 24 hours.
The government was forced to backtrack on plans to allow members of three households to mix for five days over Christmas.
On Saturday a panicked Boris Johnson announced a new Tier 4, where no Christmas bubbles are permitted at all, while mixing in all other tiers is only permitted on Christmas Day itself.
Independent SAGE, which is chaired by former government chief scientific officer Sir David King, has warned that Christmas Day household mixing will be "incredibly dangerous" and argues the whole of the UK must be placed under Tier 4 restrictions today amid fears of super-spreading.
Yesterday Health Secretary Matt Hancock urged everyone to minimise their social contact over Christmas as much as possible, regardless of what the rules say in their area.

A total of 24 million people will be living in Tier 4 from 12.01am on Boxing Day - 43 per cent of the population of England.
This includes six million people who were added to Tier 4 in Wednesday's briefing, in areas including Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Sussex, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Wales and England both have an R number of 1.3, according to latest estimates, while Scotland's stands at 1.1.
