New coronavirus cases in Bristol hit eight-week record

Bristol has recorded its biggest daily rise in coronavirus cases this month.

According to figures released by Public Health England today (Tuesday, August 25), 15 new patients have been diagnosed with the virus in the city over the past 24 hours, bringing our total to 1,463.

On Thursday, Government figures showed 11 new cases for the city in 24 hours, and nine on Sunday.

The last time Bristol's cases surpassed 15 was on July 3, when more than 500 were identified in a single day as the Government updated the way it recorded data.

Two of Bristol's neighbouring districts also recorded rises.

Seven further cases were recorded in South Gloucestershire, which now has 814.

While North Somerset has 932 following a rise of one.

Figures for Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) were not on the site this evening due to 'technical difficulties'.

Across the UK, 327,798 people have now tested positive for coronavirus, an increase of 1,184 in the last 24 hours.

Covid deaths

Today's figures show 41,449 people have died across the UK - with 16 of those deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.

Neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded a Covid death since the beginning of July.

Since the start of the pandemic, there has been 272 coronavirus-related deaths in the Bristol region.

Flare-up in B&NES

The figures come on the same day residents living in B&NES have been told they must "up their game" after a "worrying" increase in cases.

Council leaders issued the warning after cases in the region rose by 25 in the four days up to August 24.
