New coronavirus cases fall in Lanarkshire during the first full week of tier 4

New coronavirus cases in Lanarkshire fell in the first full week of level four lockdown.

At her daily press briefing in Edinburgh today (Monday, November 30), First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed there had been just 49 new cases in Lanarkshire on Sunday - the lowest daily tally since September.

However, Ms Sturgeon did say that a technical issue with the way Covid-19 cases are reported mean the figures are artificially low today and may be over the next day or so.

As a result,  last week there were 1156 new Covid-19 cases in the region - a 27 per cent decrease on the previous week.

Weekly case numbers are now down by almost 60 per cent since peaking at 2719 in week beginning October 19.

Last week was the first full week since the Scottish Government moved Lanarkshire into the top tier of coronavirus restrictions in a bid to reduce the "stubbornly high" prevalence of the virus in the region before Christmas.

Following the decision to move Lanarkshire to level four from Friday, November 20, the region is set to remain under the toughest restrictions until December 11.

In total, 19,462 people in Lanarkshire have now tested positive for Covid-19 and 629 people in the region have died after testing positive.
