Narita International Airport Corp. will begin operating a new control tower to guide aircraft on the apron on Sept. 10.
The operator of Narita Airport unveiled the new tower, which is about 60 meters tall, to journalists Wednesday.
The five-story tower is quake-resistant on the first and second floors and through the central section. The upper floors, with the control room and other functions, have a seismic isolation structure.
The control room is on the top floor and has a panoramic view of the airport apron. Monitors and communication devices are installed to grasp the situation on the apron.
"We want to make operations safer and more stable than ever before," said a company official of the division in charge of airport operations.
The previous tower was once used as a control tower to give instructions for takeoff and landing. On March 26, 1978, four days before the opening of the airport, an incident occurred in which the tower was occupied by extremists. This tower will be demolished as early as next year.
