New contract confirmed for Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper as Ian Evatt reacts

Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Matt Gilks has signed a new contract with the club ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The vastly experienced shot-stopper has put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal with Wanderers.

Gilks was snapped up last summer and went on to play 35 times for the club as Ian Evatt's side secured automatic promotion to League One.

The ex-Blackpool, Rangers and Scotland international has also worked as the club's goalkeeping coach alongside his playing duties.

He joins defender Harry Brockbank, Gethin Jones, Alex Baptiste, Andrew Tutte and Lloyd Isgrove in signing a new deal this summer, to go with the additions of Josh Sheehan, Dapo Afolayan and George Johnston.

Gilks kept 16 clean sheets last season and will be looking to build on that, in a league higher next season.

After penning fresh terms, he said: “I’m delighted to have signed up for another year.

"It was never in any doubt and I’m really looking forward to playing my part in the future of this wonderful football club.”

Evatt added: “We are delighted that Matt’s decided to go for one more year.

"He’s a vastly experienced player who helped us improve no end last season and was a huge part of our success. We are looking forward to going again next season.”

Meanwhile, defender Ryan Delaney has left the club after the two parties failed to agree on a new deal.
