New community-driven play park is big hit with Paisley kids

A new play park with a host of quirky features designed by and for the community has opened in Glenburn.

The Skye park project was led by Stronger Communities Glenburn and supported by Save the Children and the STV Children’s Appeal as part of the Children’s Places programme.

The park was funded by the STV Children’s Appeal and Renfrewshire Council’s, ‘Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas and Villages Investment Fund’.

It features a You and Me Swing and a Wheelchair Roundabout as well as C-saw and Double Somersault Bars.

Local children and Stronger Communities Glenburn were instrumental in providing their views and thoughts to get the park up and running and there has been much excitement locally about the opening of Skye Park.

One local resident Yvonne Povah, who is Chair of Stronger Communities Glenburn and who has been involved in the design of the park said: “As a mum who has grown up in Glenburn, seeing the same park there since I was a child, it was definitely overdue an upgrade. Going from a tired and dated park that hardly anyone used, to a vibrant, colourful, and well used by all members of the community, has been a joy to watch.

“It has been an experience and a pleasure to be part of the group that made this happen.”

Claire Masson, Save the Children’s Partnership Lead who was involved in the delivery of Children’s Places Programme said:

“The Park has been a real labour of love and we’re so proud of the community for getting involved and making their voices heard about what the area needed.

“The park is an excellent example of communities taking a lead and being supported to drive action to improve their community. Stronger Communities Glenburn identified the need for a playpark and consulted widely with the community on what was needed and successfully secured funding to make that change happen. It is wonderful to see their ideas now realised. We want to congratulate Yvonne and the Stronger Communities Glenburn group for the incredible work they’ve done and all the children who shared their ideas.”

Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “Most of Renfrewshire’s playparks are old and outdated – a lot of them requiring complete replacement like the park in Glenburn.

“Renfrewshire Councils Playpark Fund allows communities to decide what is needed for their children and gives them a free hand in the design – after all, they know best what their young people need.

“This new playpark has been massively welcomed by the community – it is full most days with happy children and their parents feel that the equipment and surroundings are much safer than before.” She added: “Stronger Communities Glenburn have a lot to be proud of.

“They took on this project to prove to the local people how effective voluntary community organisations can be, and they have delivered on their promise to the families of Glenburn.

“I am certain they are not finished yet. This is just the beginning of improvements throughout Glenburn that all families will be able to enjoy for years in the future.

“We hope that Skye Park will be a much-loved fixture in the Glenburn community for many years to come.”
