New coin collection to celebrate bicentennial of Queen Victoria’s birth

The Royal Mint have revealed their new coin collection to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth.

The coins can only be bought from the Royal Mint’s website, so don’t expect to see them cropping up in your change at Tesco.

The cheapest of the collection is the £5 commemorative coin, which is being sold for £13.

If your budget is particularly impressive, you can get a £1,000 denomination coin - measuring 10cm in diameter and made of a kilo of gold - which will set you back a casual £49,995.

It features a double portrait of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert designed by William Wyon.

The Royal Mint said the design showed the couple “at their peak and exemplifies the optimism and drive of the age.”

The £5 Queen Victoria coin has been designed by artist John Bergdahl.

John’s design showcases his interpretation of a “young head” portrait of Queen Victoria, surrounded by inventions and innovations from her era on the throne - including the telephone.

May 24 will mark the 200th anniversary of her birth, and 18 years later she took the throne for more than six decades.

Due to the length of her reign, the coinage issued in her name was prolific and used by 25% of the world - according to the Royal Mint.

Nicola Howell, director of the consumer division at the Royal Mint, said: “Queen Victoria is one of Britain’s most iconic monarchs, so it’s fantastic to be celebrating 200 years since her birth.”
