New cob shop Easy Bite to open in Nottingham city centre property that's been empty for almost two years

A prime-site property on the edge of Old Market Square is to reopen selling breakfast and lunches. The site has remained empty since ice cream shop Dolcino closed in November 2018.

Easy Bite, which specialises in sandwiches, baguettes, panini, baked potatoes, salads and pasta dishes, has taken over the vacant spot in Beastmarket Hill.

The company has a shop in Leeds and two on the outskirts of Birmingham.

On the menu are bacon, sausage and egg sarnies and lunch-time options with fillings such as Zinger Chicken, prawns, cheese savoury, BLT and Mexican tuna.

The deal, struck by Box Property, shows that Nottingham still has "huge potential" despite the recent closures, according to director Frankie Labbate.

Losses during lockdown include Belgo, Pret, Coffee House of Nottingham, Cath Kidston, Warehouse, Oasis, Radley and Dukki.

Mr Labbate said: "Despite Covid-19 proving so far to be a major challenge for the vast majority of retail and leisure operators we are still seeing demand for city centre retail and leisure space from both national and independent innovative businesses who have used this period we are going through to reflect on what works and what doesn’t moving forwards with a change in people's attitudes and habits to how they shop, how they interact and how they eat.

"We are seeing increased demand in food, drink and experience-based operators as Covid-19 has shown that with the use of innovation and technology there is still huge potential in a city of Nottingham’s size and diversity.

"Retailers and leisure operators looking to expand right now are engaging with landlords who are more open-minded due to them physically experiencing and living through what is a very unusual turn of events which is something completely new to everyone.

"This is a great opportunity to enhance the high street and for our strong city to welcome fresh national and independent blood to its vacant spaces which brings with it fresh excitement and intrigue."
