Shoppers visiting Washington’s Asda store may soon be able to pick up online grocery orders from ‘click and collect’ lockers.
The supermarket giant has lodged a planning application with Sunderland City Council to redevelop part of its store at The Galleries.
Proposals include the installation of new self-serve lockers alongside a new van loading canopy and an extension to the canopy at the front of the store.
The ‘click and collect’ lockers are planned for a section of car park and would be housed in a large structure coated in metal cladding and anti vandal paint.
Additional features also include a digital screen and illuminated sign.
Customers using the service would have the option to pick up supplies by booking a time slot and bringing along an order confirmation, payment card or ID.
According to the plans, four dedicated parking spaces would be provided to serve the grocery collection service.
A statement on Asda’s website described the lockers as “perfect for collecting shopping on-the-go.”
It goes on to say: “They’re quick and easy to use and are temperature-controlled, so your food will be kept fresh, chilled or frozen until you’re ready to collect it.”
Sunderland City Council is expected to rule on the plans by the end of August.
