Manchester’s highly-anticipated new park has taken another step forward this month. Mayfield Park will be the city centre’s first new park in more than 100 years.
Set to open in the autumn, the six and a half acre site will form the first part of a decade’s long regeneration of the area. It will feature some 120,000 new plants, flowers, and shrubs.
Ahead of the opening, the horticultural staff had some help from year 7 students from Dean Trust Ardwick School. For some of the geography pupils, it was their first time gardening.
"The students had an amazing time at Mayfield as they gained a sneak preview of this stunning new green space in the city,” Lucy Ribbands, the school’s Head of Geography, said.

"They are very excited for the opening in the autumn - it is definitely going to make a positive change to the Ardwick area. For most of the pupils it was their first school trip in three years, they felt very special."
Mike Harrison, from U+I, which is leading the regeneration project, added: "It was a pleasure to see the students join the planting effort - they all said they can't wait to bring their families and friends to show them 'their plants'. We're confident the new Park will be a wonderful addition to the city centre when it opens in the autumn."
