New Chelsea signing Christian Pulisic 'rejected Man Utd because of Jose Mourinho'

Chelsea starlet Christian Pulisic rejected the chance to join Manchester United because his father disliked Jose Mourinho, according to his former coach.

The 20-year-old agreed to join the Blues in a £58.7 million deal from Borussia Dortmund in January, with Chelsea beating several clubs to his signature.

Many regard Pulisic as Chelsea's long-term replacement for Eden Hazard, who left to join Real Madrid in July.

But the highly rated American could have swapped Dortmund for Manchester as Pulisic's former manager at Brackley Town, Robin Walker, claimed United were interested in signing the youngster.

Walker revealed that Mourinho's tendency to not field young players prevented any potential deal from happening.

"He wouldn’t go to Manchester United because of Jose Mourinho," Walker told The Telegraph.

"His father couldn’t stand Mourinho, because he didn’t promote young players. It was at that point I asked: ‘What about London? That’s where it’s at.’

"I was trying to sell the city. His agent agreed, saying: ‘When you make these decisions, it’s all about investment and property.’ I was delighted that he did sign [for Chelsea].”

Mourinho, who won three league titles at Chelsea, was eventually sacked by United in December and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Pulisic made his debut in the 4-0 defeat against United on the opening day of the season after coming on as a substitute, and had a goal chalked off by VAR in the Uefa Super Cup penalty shootout defeat against Liverpool.
