New cheetah cubs spotted at Monarto Zoo

Four new cheetah cubs have made their public debut at Monarto Zoo — but you will have to pay $99 more than the usual entry fee to see them.

Kesho's litter was born in May and from this week are on display at the open plains zoo, 70 kilometres south-east of Adelaide.

The cubs are Kesho's second litter, after she gave birth to five cubs last year.

From this week, the cubs are viewable only to visitors who book the behind-the-scenes Cheetah Experience tour, which costs $135.

This fee includes the regular $36 adult entry fee.

The one-hour tour includes learning first-hand from the cheetah keeper about the cats and the zoo's breeding programs.

Cheetahs are classified as vulnerable to extinction in the wild with just 6,700 estimated to be remaining in eastern and south-western Africa.

They are the world's fastest animal.

With nine cubs born in the past year and a half, zookeeper Jon Allon said Monarto's breeding program was thriving.

"Potentially they could stay on as breeders at Monarto or potentially go off to other institutions," Mr Allon said.

"We've got a lot of cheetahs being born — we've got Kesho, who's a great mum and a proven breeder now, and we've got a breeding male, so plenty of options for breeding."

A competition is underway to name the cubs at the Zoos SA website.

Names to choose from include Kuishi (which means "survive" in Swahili), Thumani (precious), Mapenzi (love), Mara (spotted), Harisa (feisty), Kuamua (determined), Niokoe (save me) and Ziara (run).
