Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said more than 1,300 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus had been confirmed Thursday in the capital, exceeding 1,000 for the first time and far above the previous one-day high of 949 recorded on Dec. 26.
"What I really want to say is that the coronavirus will not take any year-end or New Year's holiday," Koike said. "I want people to spend a quiet New Year's holiday."
