New case of coronavirus is recorded at Nissan's Sunderland plant

Another member of staff at Nissan’s Sunderland plant has tested positive for the coronavirus, though his case is not thought to be linked to previous occurences of the illness.

The worker affected is recovering at home and four of his colleagues have also been asked to self-isolate as a result.

Earlier this month, 14 workers went into self-isolation after a workmate fell ill with coronavirus, but the two cases are not believed to be related.

Nissan re-started production at its Sunderland plant at the start of June, with a number of safety measures in place including screens and barriers between colleagues, and a one-way system.

The plant employs more than 6,000 people.

A Nissan spokesman said: “We are in close contact with a member of our team who is now recovering at home.

“We are working closely with Public Health England, and a further four members of our team will now begin a period of self-isolation.

“The safety of the team is our top priority and we will continue to follow all public health guidelines. We have a thorough and comprehensive set of proactive safety measures in place to protect our staff, which we will continue to review in line with public health advice.”
