New Cardinals DL Jordan Phillips carries low cap hit in 2020

The contract details are in for newly signed Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Jordan Phillips. He agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract with the Cardinals after a career season with the Buffalo Bills.

That looks like it could have a decent-sized hit on the salary cap. It doesn’t in 2020.

According to cap sites like Over the Cap, $14.5 million of the deal is fully guaranteed at signing and another $4 million becomes guaranteed next year.

The Cardinals did some cap maneuvering with his deal. Since they do not have a lot of cap space left right now, they created a dummy year at the end of Phillips’ contract. They give him an $8 million signing bonus. There is a fourth year on the contract but that voids after the third season. That allows the signing bonus to be spread out over four years.

His salary for 2020 is $2 million. So his cap hit this year is only $4 million even though he gets $10 million in cash.

His salary for 2021 and 2022 are both $10 million, so it is not complicated. He will have a cap hit of $12 million both seasons. Then, in 2023, when his contract voids, his contract will carry a $2 million hit in dead money.

So these are his salary numbers and cap hits per year:

2020: $2 million salary, $4 million cap hit

2021: $10 million salary, $12 million cap hit

2022: $10 million salary, $12 million cap hit

2023: $2 million dead money
