New café serving homemade Algerian food and cakes opens

With virtually every sector ravaged by Covid-19, there has been plenty of focus on businesses struggling and sadly closing down in some cases.

But it's not all doom and gloom, with some using the forced closure as an opportunity to carry out renovation work and others managing to launch their new business despite the challenging period.

Ali Mengoud is one person who has managed to do just that, after launching Patisserie Palace on West Street, Bedminster in place of a former charity shop.

Find out where's delivering near you:

The 51-year-old and his wife, who years ago operated a café in St Paul's, are serving takeaway homemade food including baguettes, falafel and some Algerian treats, alongside a range of delicious cakes.

"We took the site on in January and had hoped to open our business earlier, but couldn't because of coronavirus," said Ali, a trained pastry chef.

"We're really happy to finally be open and people seem excited to have somewhere new to visit.

"All of our food is homemade and is all very tasty, including delicious traditional Algerian cakes made by my wife.

"We're getting gradually busier as more people hear about us and are enjoying meeting new customers."

Patisserie Palace also offers a bespoke cake service for people looking to celebrate special occasions, as well as takeaway coffee.

Ali said he is wearing protective equipment and reminding people to keep two metres apart while queueing to comply with the Government's Covid-19 guidelines.
