New cafe opens in Carlton - here's our verdict on Albie's

At the top of Carlton Hill by the junction with Standhill Road you’ll find a small cafe called Albie’s.

From the outside it looks really inviting with a table in the sunny window, a glimpse of a coffee machine and a counter displaying some cakes.

Step inside and the smell of freshly ground coffee is delicious, the music is chilled and mellow and the welcome is instant and friendly

It was Friday morning and breakfast time so we sat in a secluded corner and checked out the menu. We were soon served and I opted for the vegan breakfast and a black coffee to come at the same time.

My other half went for the veggie option.

As we waited there was an influx of customers, some were obviously regulars whose orders were remembered by the staff (always a nice touch) and new customers like us who were more inquisitive about the options available.

The cafe is still adapting and trying new things, like opening on a Sunday.

Our breakfasts and coffee arrived quickly and were all piping hot. Mine consisted of two vegan sausages, vine roasted tomatoes, smashed avocado, brown toast, baked beans, hummus, large grilled flat mushroom and cauliflower hash.

The veggie breakfast was almost identical but instead of hummus there was halloumi and eggs. Both were £7.95.

My vegan breakfast was delicious I couldn’t fault any of it. I especially loved the cauliflower hash and the well-cooked tomatoes. I have it on good authority the the veggie breakfast also spot on.

The coffee is supplied by 200 Degrees so you know its going to be good and it didn’t disappoint. For those that need it a variety of plant milk options were available and he coffee comes with a vegan biscoff biscuit.

We sat right next to the counter and were faced with an array of lovely looking cakes made by a local company, Homemade. There is generally a vegan option, but I managed to resist.

I would highly recommend this small independent cafe that I’m sure is here to stay.
