Plans to regenerate civic buildings in Solihull to create a new business quarter have been revealed.
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has outlined plans for 'Eastgate', a new business-focused redevelopment of its council house, register office and other civic buildings at the junction of Homer Road and Church Hill Road.
It is now on the hunt for development and investment partners to deliver the project on the 5.6-acre site.
Although the details are very broad at this stage, the council has said the scheme could contain new homes, business space, public squares and civic and council accommodation alongside an "enhanced cultural and arts offer".
Eastgate forms part of the wider, 20-year masterplan for Solihull town centre which has already seen investment in Mell Square by IM properties and the new 'Westgate' office project at the opposite end of Homer Road, where more than 107,600 sq ft of accommodation is due for completion in summer 2022.
Council leader Cllr Ian Courts said: "Solihull town centre benefits from a proven track record of attracting international occupiers and investment, supporting a strong commercial and residential market.
"The council is determined to support our retail and commercial centres by being an active partner in their future.
"This is more important than ever in the current climate as all sectors plan their reset and recovery from the covid-19 pandemic.
"We recently launched our economic recovery plan for Solihull which identifies interventions to mitigate the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the Solihull economy.
"We know key factors such as its economic dynamism, well-balanced sector profile, and highly qualified workforce mean that Solihull town centre is well placed to lead in this recovery.
"That is why we are prioritising bold and exciting town centre developments such as Eastgate which are about looking ahead and planting the seeds for our future prosperity."
