New Bristol restaurant wants to 'bring geekdom to the forefront'

A self-confessed geek has opened a new venue in Bristol that both gamers and hipsters will enjoy.

The Mana House offers people the chance to play a wide range of games including Dungeons & Dragons, Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering, while enjoying top-notch food and drink sourced from local suppliers.

It's headed up by Aaron Dordi, who decided to open it after becoming frustrated at the lack of decent places for "geeks" to visit when he moved to the UK from Dubai.

"Ever since I moved here from Dubai I've been disappointed with how games are treated in the UK service industry," said the 25-year-old, who worked as a business consultant in the United Arab Emirates city.

"As a massive geek I wanted to go to a nice place that had decent food and drinks on offer and where I could play games with my friends without being leered over by people who don't get it.

"We wanted a venue that brings geekdom to the forefront and presents it in the best possible light, and I'm glad there are so many people in Bristol who think we do that."

The Mana House on Whiteladies Road is set across two floors, with the gaming area on the upper level and the restaurant on the ground floor.

Food served at the venue includes burgers, sandwiches, loaded fries and salads, while drinks are supplied by top local companies including TrueStart Coffee, Wild Beer and The Cotswold Cider Company.

There's also a selection of "crazy cocktails" to choose from.

To comply with Covid-19 guidelines, Aaron said all games are thoroughly sanitised after every use, while visitors playing Warhammer are required to bring their own pieces.

"We follow all the Government regulations very strictly and ensure everything is squeaky clean at all times," added Aaron.

"We're trying to bring back everyone in the safest possible way. People are tired of being at home playing video games and they need places like ours to start interacting with one another again."

The venue hosts a wide range of events and tournaments for gamers of all abilities to attend, with a discount on food and drink for competitors.

The building was formerly home to the Coconut Chilli pop-up and before that tapas restaurant Rosa.
