New Brighton has most covid cases in Wirral but borough progress continues

New Brighton recorded the highest number of cases in Wirral, as figures continued to fall in the vast majority of the borough.

In the week up to February 12, the seaside town registered 38 cases at a rate of 251 per 100,000, both figures were higher than any other Wirral ward.

Other areas with high case numbers included Seacombe (34 cases at 220 per 100,000), Liscard (29 cases at 180 per 100,000), Rock Ferry (28 cases at 191 per 100,000) and Bidston and St James (28 cases at 173 per 100,000).

Across the borough, 19 out of 22 wards saw cases fall, including four out of the five wards with the highest case numbers.

Only Rock Ferry and Pensby and Thingwall saw infections rise.

There was more good news in the form of positivity rates, which are the percentage of tests which come back as positive.

In the seven-day period, 5.6% of tests came back as positive, down from 8.3% last week.

It is another significant fall, the fifth weekly decline in a row after January 8 when the rate peaked at a huge 20.3%.

But it is still not as low as the rate of 2.3% recorded in the first week of December, as the second national lockdown ended.

Hospital numbers remain high, but they are also now starting to fall.

In the latest update on cases at a borough-wide level, which covers the week up to February 14, it was clear that the decline in the virus was continuing.

Wirral had 407 cases at a rate of 126 per 100,000, down from 637 cases at 197 per 100,000 one week earlier.

Just like the positivity rate these numbers represent huge progress from the January 8 peak, when the rate was 988 per 100,000.

However, the borough’s rate is still well above the trough seen in the week up to December 3, when the rate of 52 per 100,000 was recorded.
