New booking system for West Bridgford tip after 'safety concerns' on busy residential roads

A new booking system is being tested at a tip in West Bridgford following a number of safety concerns raised by residents who live nearby.

Tips and household waste and recycling centres reopened back on May 18 after being closed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

However, huge queues formed upon the reopening and local authorities across the county implemented traffic management systems to keep people safe.

Nottinghamshire County Council says as the more local businesses and facilities reopen, the authorities have less resources to maintain management systems and will therefore be testing a new booking system from September 1.

Residents in West Bridgford before complained of the recycling centre in Rugby Road, due to its close proximity to Greythorn Drive Primary School.

Many people said it was an "accident waiting to happen".

Councillor Phil Rostance, vice chairman of the communities and place committee at the County Council, said: “When we reopened the site back in June we implemented temporary traffic management arrangements to minimise the queues on Rugby Road due to a number of road safety concerns.

"However, since Covid-19 restrictions have been relaxed further, and local businesses and facilities have reopened, including the Rushcliffe Arena, maintaining this temporary traffic management solution is no longer possible.

“We have listened to the concerns of local families and the wider community and will instead trial an online booking system to control visits to the site in a safe and managed way.

"Safety is our number one concern and I’d like to thank all users of the site for working with us during these difficult times.”

The West Bridgford recycling centre will be accepting pre-booked vehicles only from September 1.

Pre-booked 15-minute time slots will start at 8:15am and run until 7:45pm every day during the summer opening hours, with five vehicles allowed on site at any one time.

The council says residents must be registered to use Nottinghamshire County Council’s recycling centres, which can be done through the online portal.

Slots will be bookable two weeks in advance, but the council has asked residents to avoid making multiple bookings and to us other sites where a second visit is needed.

Only the West Bridgford recycling centre will need to be pre-booked, and the 11 other sites will remain open to people without a pre-booked slot.

A paper or electronic copy of the booking will be required for access, the council added.
