New book gives chapter and verse on old motoring gems

FANS of concept cars and motoring exotica will want to check out the latest book by Scots author Lewis Mitchell.

Motor Show Concepts & Rarities provides a fascinating insight into the wonderful automotive creations of the past.

Covering the period from the 1950s through to the 1990s, the book features original motor show photographs, most of which are previously unseen.

The carefully curated collection of images comes with detailed notes of the machines featured.

Highlights include stunning one-offs and rarities from famous design houses such as Bertone, Pininfarina and Ghia, as well as marques as diverse as Porsche, Ferrari and Saab.

Lewis, 49, from Stepps, near Glasgow, said: “This book encompasses what is arguably the heyday of innovative concept car design, as well as the many coachbuilt specials.

“Manufacturers’ in-house designers would never be as daring again and I love the innovative period from the 50s to the 90s, where the concept cars really were out there.

“Today’s concepts are often quite similar to the production cars that come later. For me, the photographs, the majority from my own collection, are the most important thing.

“They don’t have to be perfect – some are a little blurry or have family members in them but that’s the charm of them – they make for an interesting look back at social history.”

Motor Show Concepts & Rarities is available to buy online at www.motorshowphotos.co.uk, priced £17.95 plus postage.

Lewis concluded: “This is simply an attempt to produce the book I would like to have been able to buy myself but was not available – until now.”
