New Belfast housing development could be finished by end of summer

A housing association hopes to see three apartment blocks in East Belfast finished by the end of the summer, they said today.

The three blocks are part of the Lewis Mews development at Lewis Square in the city and will provide 44 new ‘general needs and older people accommodation’ for 129 people, Choice Housing says.

They added that the social housing development has been under construction since October 2020 and with contractors on site “making good progress” they believe the timeframe for handover of these blocks will be “towards the end of summer 2022”.

The £7m plus project is being funded with with £2.5m from Choice and £4.7m from the Development Programme Group by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

As well as social housing provision at Lewis Mews, Choice says there are plans for a further investment by their subsidiary Maple and May for the development of another two blocks (D and E) “to include a mix of homes for affordable sale (12 apartments) and private rent (15 apartments)”.

Choice Group Chief Executive, Michael McDonnell said: “This new development is unique in its mixed offering of quality social housing provision alongside affordable sale and rental options, aimed at increasing the supply of affordable homes for young people and families trying to get on to the property ladder.”
