New bars on Newcastle's Diamond Strip delayed in opening just hours before huge launch night
The launch of two new bars on Newcastle's Diamond Strip has been delayed at the last minute.
La Fee and Verano were due to open in the former House of Smith venue on Collingwood Street in the city centre tonight (October 8) but now partygoers will have to wait another week before they can step inside for the first time.
The Apartment Group, which owns the venues, today confirmed that the two bars will now open on Thursday, October 14 after contractors carrying out the work ran into problems with getting things delivered on time.
Absinthe bar La Fee and late-night club Verano had been due to welcome drinkers from 5pm tonight.
Debrah Dhugga, chief operations officer of The Apartment Group, said: "We have had to push our big launch back a week.
"We are not going to open on Friday as planned because of deliveries.
"There is this massive issue with deliveries - just getting things.
"We were going to open and then decided that no, we were just going to wait. So it will be launching next Thursday."
It comes as many industries across the UK are hit by supply-chain issues as a result of the pandemic and worker shortages in several key sectors, with the problems compounded by Brexit disruption as the UK emerges from lockdown.
La Fee, which will open in the former House of Smith cocktail lounge, and Verano, which will open up in the former venue's club area, are two of four new venues on the Diamond Strip.
The Apartment Group is opening the bars as part of a £3 million investment into the city's nightlife economy.
The company is looking to overhaul what was once one of the city's most popular nightlife areas, which has remained largely dormant since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
Howlers, Newcastle's first ball pit bar, was the first of the four new venues to open on Friday, October 1 following a £1 million investment that has transformed the former Madam Koo venue.
A third venue, Cha Cha Buchi, is also set to open in the former Florita's bar following the launch of Verano and La Fee, with further details still to be confirmed.
The venue will offer a space for hot-desking for workers during the day and will then welcome customers 'of all ages' in the evening to enjoy drinks and music.
