New bar selling cocktails, gin and craft beer could open in Low Fell

Cocktails could replace crusts if an application to turn a bakery into a boozer is 'toasted in' by the council.

Brewer Gavin Hattrick is hoping to open a Gilbert and Smith Bar on Durham Road, following the success of the original bar in Whitley Bay .

In a statement to Gateshead Council he wrote: "We currently operate several bars within the Whitley Bay area and operate Whitley Bay Brewing Company where we brew our own craft beers."

He said the planned Low Fell bar would focus on high end cocktails, gins, real ale and craft beer.

Mr Hattrick added: "One of our bars in Whitley Bay, Gilbert and Smiths is a small bar which sells high end cocktails, gins real ale and craft beer and aiming towards a clientele aged 40 and upwards. We are wanting to create another Gilbert and Smiths at Durham Road."

He also explained that the building was given permission as a bakery in 2017 but is currently empty.

Gateshead Council will decide on the application by May 8.
