New Ayr leisure centre hall controversy sparks debate

The decision to jettison a main hall from the proposed new Ayr leisure centre has provoked heated debate – both for and against the plans.

Readers of Ayrshire Live's Facebook page have aired their views on the proposals.

Alan Deans said: "Lose the Citadel and you lose the last big hall in Ayrshire, no venue for big gigs, antiques fair, model railway show.

"The biggest problem about the Citadel is that it cant be expanded. Keep as is, build a big arena elsewhere, [an] ice rink perhaps."

Louise Lauchlan wrote: "I don’t know anyone who is happy with this plan. Most people I have spoken to want money to be spent on the existing site to improve it."

South Ayrshire Conservative councillor Martin Dowey was scathing about the proposals and outlined an alternative vision for the town.

However, many people were not impressed with his 'back to basics' approach.

Stuart Paton said: "Saying we need to go 'back to basics' shows how out of touch people are. The high street has changed and the town needs to change to accommodate that.

Patrick Hill was more positive and said: "So why not imagine being able to go swimming in the town centre?

"It has also been shown that eliminating cars has increased footfall and, importantly, spending. We need imagination."

Willie Bone added: "The rationale of moving a leisure centre into town may have two good reasons. One obvious reason, swimming in a pool or playing badminton or tennis in a games hall will remain unaffected by the onslaught of online shopping.

"The second reason is the leisure centre would be reachable on foot in town from a local bus stop or railway station, encouraging motorists to leave the car at home!"
