On the same day that Avengers: Endgame tickets finally went on sale, Marvel also dropped a brand new, 1-minute teaser trailer that, on the surface, could be chock full of spoilers, but is in reality probably just FULL OF LIES.
Marvel has a history of deceiving trailers, deliberately cutting scenes to alter and skew expectations for what happens in the actual movie. Take for example, this totally egregious cut from the Infinity War trailer that shows Hulk at the Battle of Wakanda.
In fact, the Hulk doesn’t show up at all in Infinity War, and his absence is a pretty significant plot point.
So, with Marvel’s history of being lying liars who lie in mind, here are some theories (remember, these are just theories not spoilers) about what’s really going on in the spoiler-ific new Avengers: Endgame trailer.
Tony and Pepper reunite

Tony and Steve reunite

There’s been speculation that Endgame is going to involve a lot of time jumps and possible travel to different realities. The most compelling moment of the trailer shows Tony and Steve shaking hands, but there’s a huge possibility that this isn’t the Tony Stark and Steve Rogers we know, but possibly alternate versions of themselves. Look at Tony’s hair, which is much grayer, and Steve’s Captain America suit, which is noticeably darker and more subdued.
Avengers: Assemble

The narrative thread of this new trailer focuses on Tony Stark returning to Earth and marshaling his team to fight again. This group shot of the surviving team members (plus Carol!) would be a slam dunk if we hadn’t already been burned so badly by the outright lies in the Infinity War trailer. Can we really trust that this shot, with all parties present and accounted for, will actually be in the movie? NO.
Steve’s bathroom shot
Who is looking at this photo of Peter and Tony?

Cue the tears. This sequence is cut to look like its Tony mourning over Peter’s vanishing after he returns to Earth, ridden with guilt. Very possible, but it could again be misdirection over who’s actually looking at the photo. Also, the little detail here of Peter and Tony not only doing bunny ears in a fake Stark internship photo but also holding his certificate upside down makes me die inside a million times over.
It’s maddening really, to try to tease out any kind of plot from these trailers after Marvel has been known to throw in some red herrings. All we know for sure is that it looks freaking incredible. Endgame, if you don’t know by now and don’t already have your tickets, hits theaters on April 26.
