New artwork in St Werburghs aims to capture your mind not your wallet

A new art installation has been installed in St Werburghs and it is mesmerising.

Adblock Bristol have teamed up with local artist Matt Mason, as part of a campaign to make Bristol the UK’s first digital advertising free city.

He created the striking digitally constructed piece on the corner of Minor Road and York Street.

Robbie Gillett coordinator for Adblock Bristol said: “We are trying to create the UK’s first ad-free city by producing positive alternative to corporate advertising.

“It is a rolling programme of community artwork which we believe is better than large corporations sending messages that is focused on profit and not the people in these communities.”

Councillor Jude English said: “I do not think that cooperate advertising is good for the people, environment and our mentality.

"What Adblock Bristol are doing is giving the community a voice and making a change."

Artist Matt Manson has lived in Bristol all of his life and is keen to find new avenues to display is work.

Councillor Jude English came out in support of the new art work (Bristol Live)

He said: “As a local born and bred Bristolian, it’s the first time I have had my art work displayed on this scale and it is nice to display my work in the community without a profit driven agenda."

Mr Gilllett believes that if other cities across the globe can occomplish ad free spaces, Bristol should be no exception.

He added: “Art serves many different functions in society but with corporate advertising there is an agenda.

"We want to use the local artwork as a way of celebrating what we as a community already have.

"South paulo, a city of nine million people introduced a ban in 2007 and Cronobke in France have gone advertise free since 2003 - why can’t Bristol do the same?"
