New Arsenal signing thinks Thomas Partey transfer makes Gunners title contenders

New Arsenal goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson has hailed the club's capture of midfielder Thomas Partey, and thinks the move is a huge statement of intent.

The Gunners swooped for the Ghanaian international on deadline day, paying his £52.5m release fee in order to complete the signing from Atletico Madrid.

Big things are expected of Partey, who could be in line to make his Premier League debut on Saturday when Arsenal take on Manchester City.

Runarsson himself is a new face at the Emirates after completing a move from French side Dijon last month for just over £1m, and speaking to Goal he explained his optimism for the future following the signing of Partey.

"I was so excited because it shows everybody the ambition that the club has: that we want to go back to compete for the Premier League and Champions League," he said.

"We want to take part in all the major competitions, and not just take part but win. To sign Thomas, it just shows the world what we are all about."

Runarsson comes in to replace Arsenal's former backup goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who made a move to Aston Villa this summer.

And Runarsson has been inspired by the way Martinez took advantage of his opportunity to shine at the latter end of last season while first-choice Bernd Leno was injured.

"I read an interview with him a couple of days ago and he said he came in as the ninth-choice goalkeeper, but he worked his a*se off to become the first-choice at Arsenal after Leno's injury," Runarsson added.

"Then, he makes a brilliant move to Aston Villa for £20m. That should inspire everyone, not just me.

"That's my plan: to work my a*se off, enjoy every minute of it and get as many games as possible."
